Before you wire a dollar, call us.
Criminals copy real closings and send fake wiring instructions. Four simple rules keep your down payment safe.
It starts with one hacked inbox.
Hackers have learned to use the real estate closing process to steal millions of dollars from people buying or selling a home. It usually happens in four steps.
Someone gets into the inbox of a person on the deal: buyer, seller, agent, lender or title agent.
They send "new" wiring or payment instructions that nobody else knows about.
If nobody questions it, the down payment goes to the criminal.
By the time the mistake is found, the money is often long gone.
Four rules. Every closing.
Question every email with wiring instructions.
Especially one that says the instructions have changed.
Call before you send any money.
Call your contact at the title company to check the instructions, then call your bank to check them too. Use a number you already trust, never one from the email.
Call after you send it.
Call right after the money goes out, so you know the right people received it.
Act at once if anything seems unusual.
Contact your bank, your mortgage company and us immediately.
Call first. Ask questions later.
Minutes matter once money has moved. Call your bank, your lender and us right away. If something is wrong, you may also need to contact your local FBI office.
Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. Save this number in your phone today, before any email arrives.
